Safety Management System

What is a safety management system?

A safety management system (SMS) is a structured and documented system designed to manage and improve safety and health in the workplace. The main purpose of a SMS is to help an organization identify, assess, manage and minimize risks so that employees and other stakeholders in the workplace are protected from injuries and health problems. A well-designed SMS also helps meet legal requirements relating to occupational health and safety and can contribute to a positive safety culture within the organisation.

Some important features and components of a safety management system include:

  • A clear policy and objectives
  • Risk assessment (RI&E)
  • Planning: What, Who, Where and When?
  • Implementation: Process from development to implementation.
  • Monitoring and measurement through supervision.
  • Assessment: Periodic auditing of the SMS and safety performance
  • Continuous improvement: Plan, Do, Check & Act circle
  • Communication: Effective communication is crucial within a SMS to ensure that everyone involved is aware of safety issues and measures.

Different organizations may follow different SMS models and standards, such as for safety OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 / QA ISO 9001 & environmental ISO 14001. However, the ultimate goal is always to promote the safety culture, minimize risks and ensure health and the well-being of employees.
